Ms. Geertrui Louwagie
Deputy Head of Cooperation and Team Leader, Delegation of the European Union to Nepal
Ms. Louwagie currently serves as the Deputy Head of Cooperation and Team Leader at the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal. With a rich and diverse career spanning over two decades, Ms. Louwagie has contributed significantly to international cooperation, sustainable development, and environmental management across multiple regions.
Before her role in Nepal, she worked as a Cooperation Officer for Rural Development, Food Security, and Environment with the European Commission in Liberia, and earlier in Eritrea. In these roles, she led initiatives aimed at improving rural livelihoods, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Her work has consistently focused on addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by developing countries, including poverty alleviation, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability.
Ms. Louwagie also has extensive experience working with the European Environment Agency, where she managed soil assessments and provided policy support and analysis for addressing soil and land degradation in the European context. She played a pivotal role in ecosystem assessment and land resource efficiency, working closely with country networks, the European Commission, and international organizations such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Ms. Louwagie holds a PhD in Soil Science from Ghent University, Belgium, and has been a post-doctoral researcher at both the European Commission Joint Research Centre and University College Dublin. Throughout her academic and professional journey, she has consistently demonstrated her expertise in managing complex projects, developing policy frameworks, and fostering collaboration between stakeholders at all levels.
