Prof. Dr. Shobhakar Dhakal

Dr. Shobhakar Dhakal is a Professor and former Vice President (Academic Affairs) of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). His areas of expertise are energy and climate policy, energy-economy-environment modeling, cities, and climate change. He was the Coordinating Lead Author of the Sixth and Fifth Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Climate Change Mitigation. In the past, he was Executive Director of the Global Carbon Project (Japan), a Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Austria), and a Senior Policy Researcher at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (Japan). He is also currently an advisor to Nepal’s Electricity Regulatory Commission.
He holds a Ph.D. in Urban Energy and Urban Heat Island Mitigation from The University of Tokyo, and both a Master’s in Energy Economics and Planning from AIT and a Bachelor’s in Power Systems from the National Institute of Technology Surat.
