About Parallel 5

Waste management in Nepal has become increasingly critical as urbanization, population growth, and changing consumption patterns lead to escalating waste generation. The traditional focus on waste collection and disposal has proven insufficient, with open dumping and burning practices causing significant environmental and health challenges. The current scenario demands a paradigm shift towards sustainable waste management solutions, including innovative practices like recycling, waste-to-energy (WtE), and transforming waste into economic resources.

Despite the challenges, there is growing recognition of the potential to convert waste into valuable resources. The concept of "waste to money" emphasizes the economic opportunities inherent in recycling, composting, and energy recovery from waste, creating a circular economy that benefits both the environment and the economy. The 'Waste Management' session at the Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2024 will delve into these aspects, examining how Nepal can adopt and adapt global best practices to its context. The session will explore the challenges and opportunities in waste management, emphasizing sustainable solutions like recycling, waste-to-energy, and other innovative practices that can turn waste into a resource, thereby contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth.
